Roxy Soundcheck: Spotlight on Neal "Sugar" Caine

He's All About The Bass.

Bassist Neal “Sugar” Caine has made a name for himself as one of the most acclaimed bassists in modern jazz. Known for his deep sense of swing, rich tone, and impeccable time, Caine has spent decades performing with some of the most celebrated artists in music. Over the course of his career, Caine has worked with icons like Harry Connick Jr., Diana Krall, Jon Batiste, and Wynton Marsalis. His ability to anchor an ensemble while injecting infectious melodic and rhythmic creativity has made him a sought after collaborator on stages and in studios the world over.

“Some of my biggest influences include Israel Crosby, Jimmy Garrison and Wilbur Ware,” the constantly in-demand bassist tells us. “And my philosophy is to have a big, fat bass sound  and swing as hard as possible, while playing with creativity and originality.” It’s a philosophy that has served him well. Caine continually demonstrates remarkable versatility, performing in settings that range from intimate jazz clubs to major concert halls. His work reflects a deep understanding of the jazz tradition while embracing the spontaneity and innovation that keep the music evolving. Whether supporting a vocalist, driving a small group, or anchoring a large ensemble, he brings a singular sense of grit and gravitas to the music at hand.

Beyond his accomplishments as a performer, Caine continues to inspire aspiring musicians around the globe. His career stands as a testament to the importance of listening, collaboration, and fostering compelling musical conversations. Through his performances and recordings alongside many of jazz’s most respected artists, he continues to elevate the jazz community and embrace the legacy of the bass in modern, improvised music.

Caine has been a staple of late at Roxy Bar for its acclaimed Sunday brunch series. “I love the bringing daytime jazz and good vibes to the Roxy,” he says. “The big, cavernous space makes for an almost church like experience!”
