Roxy Soundcheck: Spotlight on Michael Garin

This week at Roxy Bar located in the Roxy Hotel New York, we’re proud to feature the acclaimed pianist, composer and NYC’s unofficial king of the piano bar, Michael Garin, who tickles the keys of our Steinway five nights a week, Tuesday-Saturday from 6:00-8:00 PM. Reserve a table for one of his legendary performances at Roxy Bar.

NAME: Michael Garin

HOMETOWN: Greenbelt, Maryland.

MUSICAL TRAINING: Piano lessons with Mrs. Mirabella and Mr. Moses. All other training was acting and musical theater.

FIRST GIGS: The Auto-Train (yes, there was a piano on the train in the “skylight lounge”).

MY MUSICAL INFLUENCES: Otis Redding, David Oistrakh, Hank Jones, Earl May, Theodore Bikel, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Abdel Wahab.

WHAT I’M LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW: Enrico Macias, Idir, the Revivo Project, John Eliot Gardiner, Smokey Robinson.

LATEST MUSICAL PROJECTS: “Mary Astor’s Purple Diary” –  composing music and lyrics for a new theater piece.

FAVORITE PLACE TO GO IN NYC: Other than the Roxy? The Hunt and Fish Club, 1 White Street, and the Olive Tree.

IN 2023 I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO: Being part of a major hip hop recording release with a sensational artist. Details to follow ‘as soon as possible’…ya dig?

WHY I LOVE PERFORMING AT THE ROXY BAR: It’s a family and friends place, so the vibe is always upbeat. And the mix of ages, ethnicities, and styles adds to the gumbo that is NYC. The mashups are a direct result of reading the room. Where else does Shaggy mix with Rodgers and Hammerstein?
