NAME: Jon Regen
HOMETOWN: New York, NY
MUSICAL TRAINING: So many teachers along the way have made their mark. My high school band director Matt Krempasky simultaneously kicked my behind and made me believe I could have a career in music. Later, I spent a year at the famed University of Miami School of Music studying under Vince Maggio, a giant of a teacher and a dear friend until his passing earlier this year. Lastly, I was lucky to apprentice jazz piano legend Kenny Barron at Rutgers University, where I received my Bachelor of Music degree and learned from a true master about touch, time, grace, and patience.
FIRST NYC GIGS: Playing keyboards in a rock band at Kenny’s Castaways and the Bitter End on Bleecker Street as a teenager. It was a high I won’t soon forget!
MY MUSICAL INFLUENCES: Kenny Barron, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Duran Duran, Billy Joel, Elton John, Martha Argerich, and on and on.
WHAT I’M LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW: Keith Jarrett’s Facing You.
LATEST MUSICAL PROJECTS: I’m working on the follow-up to my 2019 album Higher Ground with Jamiroquai keyboardist Matt Johnson producing. This one is a bit of a departure with some surprising guests!
FAVORITE PLACE TO GO IN NYC: Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge. It puts things into perspective.
IN 2022 I HOPE TO: finish my new album and get back on the road!
WHY I LOVE PERFORMING AT THE ROXY BAR: It’s a gift to perform in such an inspiring space. Everyone moves to the music!
